Experience Versus Wisdom Session:2

I have come across an interesting phenomenon dealing with two types of people. One with vast experience and little wisdom who hasn’t gotten anywhere and another with great smarts(often substituted for wisdom) yet little experience who haven’t gotten anywhere either. What’s the difference between the two?

Neither one has any real wisdom

Wisdom can be simply stated as knowing the difference between doing something wise versus doing something dumb. Once you know the ledge (Knowledge) of the wise and dumb (Wisdom) only then will you have something real to stand under (Understanding). Knowledge, wisdom, and understanding are the only things that truly make the world go round :)

Quick SideNote: Mathematically speaking, these three attributes can ba expressed as 120 degrees each totaling a full 360 degree circle of life. If any one of these is missing or deficient you will NOT come to a full completion in that endeavor.

So how do we obtain wisdom? One way is by simply observing what works in a given situation. I once read a maxim from the book Million Dollar Habits stating,

Only a fool learns through his own experience, but the wise learns  through the experience of others.

Listen to the more experienced ones or at least those more experienced in the particular endeavor you plan to undertake and learn from their mistakes before you make mistakes on your own. If you can find no one then read books dealing with the obstacles successful people had to go through and you will start to notice certain trends. The wise man prepares himself ahead of time for dealing within those trends and is thus, able to overcome them in a far more graceful manner.

Another Quick SideNote: Always follow my main motto which says to only do what works!

However, there is one missing ingredient to achieving wisdom…that missing link to having a complete life(360 degrees). That ingredient is ACTION. Life implies that something is living which means it is in some type of motion;therefore, there is no life without ACTION. One can come to a point where he knows many things yet produces no things because he takes no course of action. Don’t let yourself become too overcautious because it freezes your potential to act. This is the one thing that messes smart, knowledgeable people up. They truly are too smart for their own good!

There will be times when you absolutely must engage in some form of action and learn through your own mistakes because those particular mistakes tend to lead to the real success you need. One could then easily conclude that they weren’t mistakes at all :)

Other more esoteric ways of obtaining wisdom are available and perhaps we’ll get into that in future sessions, but for now,be wise by observing what works and then take ENGAGE!

Experience Versus Wisdom

Session1:

This past Sunday on the Stephanopoulos Report Senator Tom Daschle and Governor Mitt Romney argued a very interesting debate:

Experience Versus Wisdom

Daschle exclaimed how political history at the highest levels here in the U.S. has proven experience does not always provide the answers to the country’s wows. This country has been led by plenty of old experienced presidents, senators, and representatives who’ve been “in the game” only to make decisions that go against the very nature of its citizens. Mitt Romney in a condescending fashion rebuttled with the following:

I believe wisdom is born from experience…

Sounds goods, but it is the absolute truth? Obviously, this belief comes from his own personal history of climbing the corporate ladder of success and perhaps from his religious beliefs as well. However,I tend to agree more with Daschle. For example current President Bush has been around the political scene all his life, made multi-million dollar decisions as a businessman, and served as governor over the largest U.S. state all before his first term as president yet when interviewed by Bob Costas he had the ordasity to say “the U.S. doesn’t have any problems”…definitely NOT an observation based on WISDOM!

As political comedian John Daly said,”…perhaps that’s the problem!”

Yes,experience can make you wiser in the sense that you keep going through the same thing in life until you learn from them;ie,repeat the same mistakes over and over again you finally identify the mistake behavior and alter it in the moment. But for the most part you must already possess a certain level of wisdom in order to truly experience! You must wise enough to properly interpret the experience you are going through in order to learn from it lest you end up being nothing but an old fool.

So just what is WISDOM,how do we get it,and why isn’t it so readily present among the the supposed more experienced ones?

So stay tuned for the answers to this and more in upcoming sessions on Experience Versus Wisdom.
